Skyward Sword: Prelude to Hyrule…and Termina?

WARNING: SKYWARD SWORD SPOILERS AHEAD

Admin Note: Before someone gets into a big fuss about how improbable this may be, I just wanted everyone to know that this is merely speculation and me forcing a connection between the two games. It’s fun to think about, though.

As most fans know, Skyward Sword (SS) takes place before the events of Ocarina of Time (OoT), maybe even before all Zelda games. A fairly accepted theory, even acknowledged and confirmed by the game’s creators, a split in the timeline occurs during OoT.

One of many fan timelines.

According to the split timeline theory, when Zelda sent (adult) Link back to the past (Child Timeline) to live out his life as a child, the future timeline (Adult Timeline) continued without being rewritten and without Link. Majora’s Mask (MM) is a direct sequel to OoT, so obviously it follows the child timeline. Many believe that Wind Waker (WW) followed the adult timeline since it claimed the Hero of Time never returned to save Hyrule from Ganon, thus leading to the flood.

For those that are late in the game or have beaten it, in SS, Link goes back in time to defeat Demise. After he’s defeated, Link goes back to his own time and everything is peachy (sorta; Demise promises to haunt Link’s bloodline, probably as Ganon/Ganondorf, until the end of time). What I’m wondering is that if that the time traveling that took place in OoT lead to two different timelines, could the same thing have happened in Skyward Sword? What if the “present” timeline led to OoT & Hyrule and the past timeline (in SS, not OoT, in case you’re lost) lead to the creation of Termina?

Perhaps without the presence of a goddess (Zelda), things go awry. Here’s what could’ve happened:

  • Demise breaks the seal in the Master Sword, not as powerful as before
  • Demise seeks the triforce, Sheikah engage the nuclear option and destroys the triforce
  • Sky islands crash to the ground in reaction, humans hold out in central area, geography drastically changes over time due to turbulence
  • All races try to fight off Demise, Demise creates four giants to garner control
  • Stone Tower is built in an attempt to reach goddesses, but the goddesses have abandoned them, land is doomed (Termina > terminal)
  • The long lost tribe in MM, possibly the remnants of the Sheikah, find mysterious hexing mask, use it to turn the four giants against Demise
  • Demise is defeated, four giants become protectors
  • Great war erupts in Ikana over Majora’s Mask, the hexing mask used to defeat Demise, sealed away due to evil nature, Ikana Kingdom devastated
  • Later, Happy Masks Salesman, an interloper from the Hyrule timeline, seeks and finds Majora’s Mask in Termina
  • Skull Kid, also an interloper between timelines/dimensions, steals Majora’s Mask from Happy Mask Salesman and horse from Link, Link dragged into Termina
  • Through the eyes and power entrusted in Link, the goddesses of the Hyrule timeline discover Termina and aid their hero to give this doomed land one last chance

There is one gaping hole in all of this though: in SS, Zelda gives past Impa her bracelet, and when they return to their time, present Impa was wearing the same bracelet. This would mean that instead of another timeline being created, the current timeline was simply rewritten. But would this also meant the split in OoT couldn’t of happened either? Hmmm…

Let me know what you think or of any more holes or incorrect information regarding this theory. If there are enough responses, I’ll be sure to post them.
